Time course of gfap mRNA levels in the Grid2 Lc/+ (Lc) cerebellum from postnatal day 5 (P5) to P110. Gfap mRNA is present in large amounts from P22 to P120. The gfap mRNA is produced in a large burst coinciding with the end of the episode of massive neuron degeneration. The results are expressed as the ratio of Grid2Lc/+ gfap mRNA to wild-type gfap mRNA, and the means ± SEM of four to six paired age-matched Grid2Lc/+and wild-type mice are shown. Age-related survival of neurons (shaded in gray), including Purkinje and granule cells, was determined from the estimates of Caddy and Biscoe [11]. Survival is expressed as a percentage of the number of cerebellar neurons on P4.
