Protective effect of CpG ODN pre-treatment correlated with high concentrations of IL-12/IL-23p40 in serum. CpG ODN or buffer was administered 72 h before infection. IL-12/IL-23p40 levels (in pg/mL) were measured at (A) 52 h and (B) 5 h before infection and (C) at the time of sacrifice, that is, 42 h after intracerebral E. coli K1 infection (1 × 104 CFU/mouse). Each symbol represents an individual neutropenic mouse (n = 9-10/group). Horizontal bars indicate median values. Statistical analysis was performed by Mann-Whitney U test.
