Microglial CD11b, but not MHC class II expression, is influenced by low GM-CSF levels. Primary microglia propagated either with (+) or without (-) GM-CSF were seeded onto 12 mm cover slips at 2 × 105 cells per cover slip and incubated overnight in 24-well plates. The following day, cells were either unstimulated (A) or treated with heat-inactivated S. aureus (107 cfu/well) (B) for 24 h, whereupon microglia were stained with CD11b-FITC (green) and MHC Class II-Alexa-568 (red). Nuclei were visualized with Hoechst dye (blue). Panel (C) depicts background staining with secondary antibodies only. Results are representative of two independent experiments.
