Estrogen treatment results in a decrease in IL-6 levels in the brain following severe burn injury. After burn injury and subsequent estrogen treatment, using the ELISA assay, we found that at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24 hours post burn, there was a significant decrease (~90%) in the levels of IL-6 in animals receiving 17 β-estradiol compared with the placebo group.
