A significant elevation in IL-1β mRNA and protein expression was seen in the aged rats in comparison to the young animals but vitamin D supplementation mitigated the increase seen in this pro-inflammatory cytokine in the hippocampus. Levels of IL-10 mRNA and protein also increased in aging as compared to the young rats but vitamin D supplementation significantly augmented the age-related increase in this anti-inflammatory cytokine. *P <0.05.
