  1. Purified microglia and enriched or purified (L-LME-treated) astrocytes were challenged with LPS (100 ng/ml), zymosan (10 μg/ml) or poly(I:C) (50 μg/ml) and processed after 6 and 24 h for intracellular IL-1β content by ELISA. Data are means ± SEM (n = 3). Note the lack of astrocyte responsiveness after L-LME. Values for IL-1β content of the corresponding culture media samples were <5 % of the intracellular values (not shown)
