CXCL12 compromises neuronal survival in a concentration-dependent fashion. Mixed neuronal-glial cerebrocortical cell cultures were incubated for 24 h with CXCL12 at concentrations of 2, 20, and 50 nM. BSA (0.001 % final concentration) served as vehicle control in the absence of CXCL12. Assessment of neuronal survival was performed as described in the text using cell counting after fluorescence staining for neuronal MAP-2 and nuclear DNA.
