Fig. 11

The effect of SB treatment on pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic protein levels in the brain after neonatal HI. Seven-day-old rats (PND7) were subjected to hypoxia-ischemia followed by 24 or 48 h of recovery. SB or vehicle was administered directly after the onset of HI and for 2 consecutive days. Figure shows representative immunoblots of pro-apoptotic Bax and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein levels (a, c) in brain hemispheres, analyzed in four experimental groups: vehicle control (C), SB-treated control (C + SB), vehicle-treated hypoxia-ischemia (HI), and SB-treated hypoxia-ischemia (HI + SB). The intensity of each band obtained by Western blotting was quantified by LKB Ultrascan XL software and normalized in relation to β-actin. Bar graphs (b, d) represent statistical analysis of densitometric data from indicated experimental groups. Note the increased expression of Bax in the ipsilateral and Bcl-2 in the contralateral side after HI. The values represent means ± SD of five animals in each experimental group. The one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test: *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01 and ***p < 0.001. C control, ipsi ipsilateral, contra contralateral
