Diagnostic differences in peripheral cytokine expression and protein concentrations. IL-2 mRNA expression level (ΔΔCt) in leukocyte cells is significantly decreased in schizophrenia (p = 0.006). There are significant increases in serum protein concentration for the cytokines IL-6 (p = 0.010), IL-8 (p = 0.024) and TNFα (p < 0.001) in schizophrenia. Bars represent the median with 95% confidence interval (IL-2) or the mean with standard error of mean (IL-6, IL-8 and TNFα)
