Recapitulation of the expected clinical relationships among the sample groups by CSF metabolite concentration profiles. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS) was performed using the pooled estimate dataset (see the “Methods” section) comprising the 88 metabolites that passed the quality screen (Fig. 1). Each circle represents the centroid of all samples in the respective group. The metabolite profiles separated the virally infected from the non-infected diagnoses along the first dimension and the three VZV reactivation forms according to increasing potential severity along the second dimension.
