Graphs (al) illustrate the PaCO2, pH, and PO2 at 30, 60, 120, and 180 min after ventilation in the rats (n = 4). Hypercapnia (5% CO2) treatment significantly increases the PaCO2 to 60–69 mmHg, with pH at 7.20–7.25, and hypoxia treatment (16% O2) maintains the PO2 levels at around 60 mmHg, while there are no interaction effects between hypercapnia treatment and hypoxia treatment (P > 0.05). The concentrations of CO2 and O2 in the air are 0.03 and 21%, respectively
