A time line of the experimental protocol. Stroke was induced in all mice via the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). All mice were scanned by MRI at day 2 after MCAO. MSCs or IL13-MSCs were transplanted into the right hemisphere, ipsilateral to the lesion, after performing MRI. Motor and sensory performance were tested and ranked according to the modified neurological deficit scores (mNDS), once before MCAO (baseline) and every 2Ā days after MCAO until the day of perfusion. All animals were sacrificed at day 14 after MCAO induction. Abbreviations: B = behavior, MCAO = middle cerebral artery occlusion, MRI = magnetic resonance imaging, IHC = immunohistochemistry
