Co-infection in the lung activates microglia. Brain sections containing paraventricular ventricle (PVN) from saline (SAL), S. pneumoniae (SP), influenza A virus (IAV) or co-infection (SPIAV)-treated mice were immunolabelled for astrocytic marker GFAP (a) and GFAP-positive area were quantified (b). Microglia were stained with Iba-1 antibody (c), and Iba-1-positive area was quantified (d).
