mHFD effect on microglial ultrastructure in the dorsal hippocampus CA1 of PND30 offspring. Ultrastructural analysis of microglia was performed in the ag st rad and hs st lac mol. ad, hk Representative pictures of microglia as well as lo higher magnification views of extracellular space pockets are provided. The interactions of microglia with their microenvironment differed between groups; here, we present main results for microglial contacts with e, q astrocytes; f, r neurons; and g, s extracellular space pockets. On the representative pictures, astrocytes, blood vessels, microglia, and neurons are respectively identified by an “A,” by “BV,” by an “M,” and by an “N.” Presynaptic and postsynaptic elements are pseudo-colored respectively in green and orange. Mitochondria are pseudo-colored in purple and extracellular space pockets in yellow. Data are shown as mean ± standard error of the mean. p < 0.05* (sex) by 2-way ANOVA, p < 0.05# (sex × diet) by 2-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-hoc test. ♀, female; ♂, male; CD, control; mHFD, maternal high-fat diet
