Pre-treatment with CpG ODN reduced the concentrations of pneumococci in the bloodstream in immunocompetent wild-type animals. Bacterial concentrations were determined in cerebellum and spleen homogenates as well as in the blood of immunocompetent mice from bacteriological studies with end point at (a) 24 h and (b) 36 h after infection. (c) Bacterial loads were also measured in immunocompetent mice which succumbed to the infection during survival studies. The detection limit was 102 colony-forming units (CFU)/ml. Data are shown as medians, and each symbol represents an individual mouse. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the bacterial concentrations in the CpG ODN- and the buffer-treated groups
