Virus transcript, inos and cytokine expression in the trigeminal ganglia of the RAG ^−/− and iNOS ^−/− mice . The C57BL/6, RAG^−/−, and iNOS^−/− mice were inoculated either with 10⁶ p.f.u. of HSV-1 or with PBS (uninfected) by the intranasal route; on the fifth d.p.i., the trigeminal ganglia were collected and processed for analysis to verify the expression of the viral gene VP-16 and the inos, tnf alpha, mcp-1, rantes, and ip-10 genes. *P <0.05; P <0.01, when comparing the infected mice with the respective non-infected mice. #P <0.05; ##P <0.01, when comparing the C57BL/6 infected mice with the indicated infected knockout mice.
