Inhibition of NADPH oxidase blunts virus-induced ROS production. Microglia were A) infected with HSV-1 for the designated time or B) left untreated or pretreated with the NADPH oxidase inhibitors DPI (0.03 - 1 μM) or APO (10 - 300 μM) at the indicated concentrations for 1 h prior to viral infection for 36 h, followed by addition of H2DCFDA (20 μM) for 45 min and quantification using a fluorescent microplate reader. Data are presented as mean ± SEM from 6-8 separate experiments. **p < 0.01 vs. control; p < 0.05 and ††p < 0.01 vs. HSV alone.
