Correlations between functional and anatomical markers. Improvement in PD signs measured by clinical rating (CR) was associated with more TH-ir optical density (OD) in the putamen (Pearson's correlation; P = 0.0024) and higher number of TH-ir nigral cells (P = 0.002). Fine motor skill (FMS) performance also correlated with the amount of preservation of TH-ir putaminal fibers (P = 0.004) and nigral cells (P < 0.001). Optical density of nitrotyrosine (N-tyr) (P = 0.001) and CD68 (P = 0.014) immunostaining was negatively correlated with the number of TH-ir nigral cells.
