The induction of IL-6 is essential for the induction of C3 by HIV in HFA. a HFA were exposed to HIV at 0.5 and 2.5 pg per cell or mock virus and extracellular IL-6 was measured by ELISA. b HFA was exposed to HIV in the presence of anti-IL-6 or control antibody; cells were then transfected with the C3 promoter luciferase construct and luciferase activity was measured 2 days later. c HFA were infected with adenoviruses, treated with IL-6, and then transfected with C3 promoter constructs to score promoter activity by luciferase expression. The differences in values between mock-infected and HIV-infected cells or between IL-6 and medium were tested by one-way ANOVA and Dunnett’s post hoc analysis with asterisk indicating p < 0.05.
