Proximity to immune cell infiltrates may foster Schwann cell dedifferentiation. Immunohistochemical analysis of Sox2-positive cells in relation to cellular infiltrates was conducted. Sox-2-positive cells were counted in close proximity to cellular infiltrates (termed “peri-infiltrative”) as well as in areas without marked infiltration (termed “para-infiltrative”). Cellular infiltrates were defined as an accumulation of DAPI-positive cells and positivity for CD3 staining. “Peri-infiltrative” was defined as the area surrounding an infiltrate by twice the circumference of that respective infiltrate. The number of Sox2-positive cells was related the number of DAPI-positive cells. Data represent mean ± s.e.m. N = 4 for each column. P ≤ 0.05*. Scale bars indicate 50 µm
